About LM Counselling
Specialist mental health support delivered with compassion
I’ve dedicated my career to improving mental health and wellbeing – particularly in children and families – through direct clinical work, practice leadership and training other professionals.
I’m an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, which means I’m a qualified social worker with recognised mental health expertise who has been assessed and accredited by the Australian Association of Social Workers. I’m also a Family Therapist with a Master of Clinical Family Therapy. This has equipped me with advanced skills to address how a family works as an interconnected system and develop tailored treatment plans that take into account the many different factors that impact mental health and relationships.
Getting the right support when you’re young builds the foundation for lifelong mental health and wellbeing. That’s why I’m so passionate about working with children, adolescents and their families and have chosen to specialise in this area of practice.
I’ve been a senior clinician in leading mental health services, including Austin Health, Orygen Youth Health and the NHS in London, supporting children and adolescents who have experienced complex and severe mental health difficulties. Throughout my career I’ve also worked with many children and families who have been through the child protection system, as well as worked in public policy to make the system better. I bring these many years of experience to each family and young person I support.
I have a special interest in treating trauma in adults, adolescents and children. This has been nurtured through my experience working with the military population through Open Arms, as well as supporting children and young people who have been exposed to traumatic events. To keep improving how I support people with a history of trauma, I’ve undertaken additional training to become an accredited practitioner in EMDR – an evidence-based therapy for trauma.
Alongside clinical work, I have taken on leadership roles in child and adolescent mental health, particularly in supporting under-12s and guiding best practice in challenging casework. I also provide training and supervision to mental health professionals across a range of organisations and disciplines, ensuring high standards of care and professional development in the field. These experiences have all shaped my therapeutic approach.
In 2017, I started LM Counselling. I love the work that I get to do in private practice. It’s where I feel I can make the most powerful impact on families and individuals.
One of the strengths I bring to my practice is a deep, personal understanding of the challenges that can shape a person’s life, including significant childhood adversity, family conflict and mental health struggles. I know firsthand the impact that the right support can have. The people who stood beside me, who helped me find my voice, empowered me to change the course of my life. That’s what I strive to offer the individuals and families I work with, someone in their corner, helping them to navigate challenges with clarity, compassion, and a path forward.
My approach
Social workers approach mental health issues from a whole-of-person perspective, integrating clinical expertise with an understanding of the broader systemic and relational factors that shape mental health. When I’m working with you, I consider multiple aspects of your life and relationships, examining how they contribute to the challenges you are facing.
My approach is grounded in evidence-based practice, incorporating comprehensive assessment, formulation and treatment planning. I work to address the bigger picture alongside targeted approaches to treat the specific mental health components. This often involves working collaboratively with other health professionals to ensure you’re getting all the support you need.
A warm, compassionate environment where you feel safe enough to be vulnerable is fundamental to my practice. My clients tell me they appreciate my empathy, sense of calm, gentle nature and my kindness. But the feedback they share most is that they feel heard. This is what I strive for in every consultation.
My approach is both directive and supportive. I want to challenge you to grow and develop, but always with care, compassion and understanding. Working together is a journey and I’m a big believer in having clear, tangible goals. We’ll regularly review your treatment goals to make sure we’re on the right track.
What makes my practice unique
Specialist skill set
I’m a specialist mental health clinician with advanced qualifications and training, including accreditation with the Australian Association of Social Workers.
I have over 15 years’ experience in child and adolescent mental health, attachment disruption, complex trauma, and PTSD, supporting individuals who have been exposed to multiple traumatic events.
My expertise spans assessment, formulation and treatment planning, ensuring that interventions are evidence-based and tailored to your unique needs.
Boutique Practice
My practice is intentionally small and personal – every client works directly with me.
Therapy is most effective when you feel safe enough to be open and vulnerable, and I’ve created a space that supports this process. My home-based setting is quiet, private and free from the clinical feel of larger practices. I’ve consciously designed the space to create a calm and comforting environment that fosters a sense of security and trust. My cats, Mia and Grace, may occasionally make an appearance, offering a grounding presence for those who find comfort in animals, particularly during trauma-focused work.
Inclusive approach
It’s critical that all my clients feel safe and accepted when working with me. My practice is proudly:
- LGBTIQA+ friendly: All genders and sexualities are welcome and respected.
- Neurodiversity-affirming: Neurodiversity is accepted and celebrated. All clients receive support tailored to their unique ways of experiencing the world.
- Trauma-informed: I have a specialist understanding of trauma and its impact on mental and emotional wellbeing. My approach is grounded in a strengths-based framework prioritising safety, trust, choice, collaboration and empowerment to support meaningful and sustainable change.
