A safe and compassionate approach to working through trauma
LM Counselling

“Trauma results in a fundamental reorganization of the way mind and brain manage perceptions. It changes not only how we think and what we think about, but also our very capacity to think.” (Van der Kolk, 2014)

Our past and present experiences shape the way we see ourselves, the world and our relationships with others. Many challenges that we may experience as adults, like depression, anxiety or emotion dysregulation, can be traced back to traumatic adverse events in our childhood.

A history of trauma can create patterns of thinking, feeling, and relating that may feel difficult to shift alone. I work with individuals and couples to explore these experiences, understand their impact and develop healthier ways of coping and connecting.

Using evidence-based therapies, I support clients to build emotional resilience, strengthen relationships and move towards a greater sense of wellbeing. My goal is to help you regain a sense of control of your inner world, feel more connected in your relationships, and move forward with confidence.

Who I work with

Individuals

I support adults who are finding it difficult to navigate life’s challenges due to their experiences of trauma. This may be due to a single traumatic event or exposure to multiple traumatic incidents (‘complex trauma’).

Complex trauma often arises from repeated or prolonged adversity, such as childhood neglect, family violence, or experiences of coercive control.

It can affect emotional regulation, self-perception and relationships, making it difficult to feel safe, trust others, or maintain a stable sense of self.

Therapy provides a structured and compassionate space to work through these challenges, helping you to reconnect with yourself and others in a way that feels secure and empowering.

I’m passionate about treating the long-term impacts of complex trauma through evidence-based strategies and have become a specialist in this area through advanced training and many years of clinical experience.

Couples

I work with couples who are struggling to communicate and connect due to their experiences as a child or adolescent, particularly where there is a history of trauma.

I help couples to understand and process these experiences so that they can better support and connect with each other.

my practice draws on the principles of this method to support healthier communication, connection and conflict resolution.

This evidence-based approach focuses on fostering intimacy, empathy and understanding while building the skills to navigate challenges together.

Evidence-based support tailored to you

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. That’s why I draw on a range of therapeutic models to best support your needs.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, to reduce the emotional charge of past events, enabling people to reframe these experiences and move forward with greater clarity and calm.

For many clients, this process can feel transformative, especially when addressing deeply embedded relational or childhood trauma.

As an accredited practitioner with the EMDR Association of Australia (EMDRAA), I have completed rigorous training, clinical supervision, and assessment to ensure I deliver EMDR therapy to the highest standard.

With over seven years of experience, I use this evidence-based approach to help clients safely process distressing memories, reduce emotional intensity, and support long-term healing.

EMDR has been recognised by the Australian Psychological Society as an effective treatment for:

• PTSD, complex PTSD, depression, specific phobia and substance use disorder in adults

• PTSD and panic disorder in children and adolescents.

Schema Therapy

I use schema therapy to explore and gently challenge long-standing patterns or narratives developed in childhood that might be impacting my clients’ relationships or sense of self today. This approach is particularly helpful for people who feel ‘stuck’ in cycles of behaviour or thoughts and want to create more fulfilling ways of engaging with themselves and others.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

CBT offers practical tools and strategies to identify and shift unhelpful thought patterns. I often integrate CBT with other methods to help clients feel more grounded and in control of their day-to-day challenges.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)

ACT helps people navigate difficult thoughts and emotions through acceptance and commitment to values-driven actions. I often use ACT to support clients in building psychological flexibility, enabling them to step out of struggle and toward a meaningful, fulfilling life.

Internal Family Systems

IFS allows me to help clients explore their inner worlds, understanding the different ‘parts’ of themselves – such as the protective, critical or vulnerable parts. Through this process, clients learn to harmonise these internal dynamics, fostering self-compassion and inner balance.
